Among the top luxury brands, the iconic triangle of Prada has got to be one of the most popular logos.

Prada was founded by Mario and Martino Prada in 1913. It was started in Milan selling bags and accessories. In 1919, the Italian Royal House made Prada its official supplier. Because of this, Prada’s iconic triangle logo was on display more, helping it become familiarized.

Mario wanted to pass his business down to his son, but his son was not interested. Instead, the business was passed to Mario’s daughter Luisa Prada. After 20 years, the company was then passed down to Miuccia prada.

Miuccia helped the brand really make a name for itself. She helped create the concept of “ugly chic” which incorporated pieces that usually would be considered ugly.

In the late 1970s, Miuccia met Patrizio Bertelli who became her husband and business partner. The duo helped create many Prada’s signatures including the classical “Prada Green” that is seen in the “green stores” in Milan, Lincoln, Madrid, Tokyo, and Paris.

In 1988, Prada introduced their first ready-to-wear line in the fall/winter Milan fashion week. The collection stood out against the vibrant colors of the ‘80s because it consisted of mainly neutral shades. The collection was actually based off of Miuccia’s wardrobe. It was simple, yet chic and effortless. There were minimal patterns and occasional pops of reds and pinks.

The brand launched its first men’s collection in Spring/Summer of 1998. This too followed the simple, yet classic, style.

In more recent news, in 2018, Prada relaunched Prada Linea Rossa which was originally introduced in 1997. It was considered a sports line and merged streetwear with luxury. The re-launch also included ski wear.

Prada was also known for their use of nylon rather than leather. However, they have switched from using a type of nylon called Pocono to using Econyl since it is considered more sustainable.

The brand belongs to a group called the Prada Group that also includes popular brand Miu Miu. Head Miuccia Prada has not gone unrecognized winning the “Outstanding Achievement Award.” Prada has also given back, particularly in concern for the environment by contributing €2 million towards healing the relationship between humans and the ocean.

Whether you know just the iconic nylon backpack with the signature triangle, or have flipped through every look from their ready-to-wear, it’s hard to not love Prada.

Till next Sunday,

Daisy
