Did you know that the first pair of flare jeans were not worn in the ‘70s?

Flare jeans were first worn in the 19th century by sailors in the U.S. Navy. The wideness of the bottom made the pants easy to roll up, convenient for big boots, and even proved helpful for catching a man overboard.

In the 1960s the younger generation began steering away from conventional ways of dressing. Flare jeans were different from the mainstream straight-legged pants showing a rebellion in favor of anti-establishment views.

With the help of musical stars such as Mick Jagger and ABBA the style saw its peak in the ‘70s. Flowers and geometric patterns were added to these pants to match the style of the Flower Children movement and hippies.

The style fell off in the 80s, but made a return in the late ‘90s/early 2000s, becoming an icon part of y2k style. Skinny jeans took over once again, but there has been a recent resurgence of flares once again. I guess we’ll never escape them!

Till next Sunday,

Daisy
